Britney Spears crashes Lady Gaga’s album release day with ‘new’ song

by

Remember Britney, folks?

Yes, it was all about Lady Gaga on Friday when she dropped “Chromatica,” her highly anticipated fifth solo studio album.

But it became a diva double feature when Gaga’s pop predecessor Britney Spears released a new-ish single on Friday, too.

“Mood Ring” — which, for the typically chirpy Spears, is moody AF — is actually a bonus track from the singer’s last studio album, “Glory” (2016), that was previously only available in Japan. But now the Britney Army in the US can download and stream the song, too.

In fact, “Mood Ring” promptly shot to No. 1 on the iTunes chart. Yup, Brit’s still got it.

It certainly raises an eyebrow that Spears would decide to crash Gaga’s release day and surprise fans with “Mood Ring” on the same day that “Chromatica” arrived.

It’s as if she’s saying, “I’m still Britney, bitch!”

But it’s also telling that “Mood Ring,” painted in surprisingly subtle shades, feels starkly different from the relentless club beats on “Chromatica.”

“My love is a mood ring/Up and down emotions/All these mood swings,” sings Spears, showing more depth in one of the better ballad performances you’ll hear from her.

How this got left off of the US version of “Glory,” who knows? But let’s hope it’s a sign that Spears — who announced an “indefinite work hiatus” in January 2019 — is ready to get back in the game with truly new music.
