These dramatic photos show a fire tearing through 200 tonnes of paper at an industrial estate in Wigan.

The aerial shots were taken by the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service's Air Unit as smouldering paper sent smoke billowing into the skies at Kirklees Industrial Estate in Wigan.

Crews were called to the scene, on Cale Lane in Aspull, just before 7pm on Friday (May 29).

Seven pumps were sent after the piles of paper caught fire.

Jets were used to douse the blaze.

Residents in the area were urged to keep their windows and doors shut due to the smoke coming from the fire.

In a statement, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "Seven fire engines are currently dealing with an incident at Kirkless Industrial Estate in Wigan.

"Crew mobilised to the incident in Cale Lane at 6.55pm.

"Approximately 200 tonnes of waste paper is currently ablaze with firefighters using jets to douse the flames.

"A large amount of smoke has discharged over the local area and residents are asked to keep their doors and windows closed and avoid the area to allow our crew to work.

"While the blaze is being controlled, firefighters will remain at the scene throughout the night as they work to ensure the fire is fully extinguished."

It sent smoke into the air

Photos of the fire from above were tweeted by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service just before 10pm.

The tweet said: "Check our these fantastic Air Unit shots from Kirkless Industrial Estate - crew are working tirelessly to deal with the blaze."
