Firefighters are battling a mountain blaze in the Rhondda after two fires either side of the Penrhys mountain merged into one.

The South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they were called to the fire at 2.57pm on Friday in Trealaw Road in Tonypandy.

There was another grass fire already on Penrhys mountain but this has now merged with the Tonypandy fire and is around 10 hectares in size.

A spokeswoman from the fire service said: "Crews are in attendance at a mountain fire in the Trealaw Road area of Tonypandy.

"South Wales Fire and Rescue Service would like to advise residents north of this area to consider closing windows and doors due to low lying smoke."

In Llwynypia, the fire could be seen near people's homes and a helicopter was seen pouring water on top of the flames.

South Wales Police have also been in attendance at the scene after crowds gathered on the mountain to watch the blaze which prevented firefighters from controlling the blaze.

Two fire appliances and an all terrain vehicle at the scene and the fire was extinguished by 9.28pm.
