Shelby Mustang GT500 remastered with carbon fiber
Classic Recreations — an Oklahoma-based workshop focusing on major renovations — recreated an authentic 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 with a carbon fiber body, reports Inceptive Mind.
"Each car is hand crafted at our Oklahoma facility to the uncompromising standards and unique specifications of each buyer. Modern features include authentic Shelby Performance parts, rack and pinion steering, race-inspired suspension, oversized disc brakes, and more," read Classic Recreation's website on the Shelby GT500 CR and GT 350CR remasters.
Remastering the Shelby Mustang
The remastering process for the Shelby Mustang begins with an original 1967 or 1968 Mustang body that's restored to like-new condition through hundreds of hours of painstaking labor. The carbon fiber application begins with a restored donor steel tub that's fitted with new carbon fiber body panels.
This is done with a digital blue light scanner from SpeedKore, which gives Classic Recreations a 3D model of the classic car.
Applying a carbon fiber body
After this, the workshop reproduces models for the model with a five-axis CNC machine, then panels and plugs are pulled with aerospace-grade prepreg carbon fiber. Then, molded carbon fiber body panels undergo curing via a huge in-house autoclave.
The end result was the first-ever carbon-fiber-bodied Mustang, which also has an ultra steel chassis. This means the new Mustang is also the lightest and stiffest "classic" Shelby Mustang ever made, or remade.
Called an "aerospace carbon fiber" by the company, the bodywork opens the door to a wide spectrum of contemporary high-performance engines, reports Inceptive Mind.
Powering the remastered Shelby
At the heart of the GT500CR, there are numerous possible solutions to give power to the new body, from a 490-horsepower Ford Performance Gen 3 5.0 Coyote crate engine to a brow-raising 900-horsepower. Mechanics could also throw in a hand-built 7,000 cubic-centimeter (427 cubic-inch) engine featuring an intercooled ProCharger supercharger. Every Shelby GT500CR model comes with a five-speed Tremec manual transmission and a MagnaFlow exhaust made of stainless steel.
"Since 1998, Mr. Shelby believed that carbon fiber would be the future of American sports car manufacturing. We believe the introduction of a carbon-fiber GT500 Mustang and Cobra is a natural step in the evolution of these iconic vehicles and builds on the legacy of the same innovation that Carroll Shelby was known for," said Co-CEO of Carroll Shelby International Neil Cummings to Inceptive Mind.
Additionally, the Pro-Touring Track option package comes with Detroit Speed Engineering suspension, wider tires and rear wheels, along with six-piston brake calipers featuring larger rotors. Extra customization is also on the menu, like a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, a cornucopeia of interior enhancements, and the full tour of body paint colors.
