Former deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, has said that it is only God that will determine his political future ahead of 2023.

Ekweremadu is the current senator representing Enugu West Senatorial zone in the upper chamber. He has been a member of the Nigerian Senate since 2003.

The senator made the comment when he was a guest during a political programme on a radio state in Enugu state.

His words: “Only God can answer that question, not me. And I believe it is too early for me or anybody to begin to cause confusion, to distract the governor or the president by talking about what he or she aspires to be in 2023.

“I think everybody should concentrate to ensure that there is good governance, to ensure that campaign promises are delivered; ensure that issues of security are addressed and provide jobs for the people. I think that should be a worry to everybody and not who succeeds who.”

The senator also maintained that his relationship with Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi remained cordial.

Meanwhile, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has vowed to go all out for the actualization of a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction in the next presidential election scheduled for 2023.

The group stated that if it was decreed by God that an Igbo man would become Nigeria's next president, the babbling of some groups masquerading as champions of their interest would not count.

Mazi Chuks Ibegbu, the deputy national publicity secretary of Ohanaeze on Monday, May 18, in Enugu pleaded with political parties in the country to zone their presidential ticket to the southeast zone.

On the possible candidates, the spokesman said stakeholders of Igboland and Nigerians will decide on the Igbo candidate they want to become president at the appropriate time.

In a related development, a human rights lawyer and former Nigerian Bar Association chairman, Chief Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, has kicked against the zoning of the presidency.

According to him, Nigeria needs a president who is passionate about the country and has the type of passion Late Colonel Odimegwu Ojukwu had for Biafra.
