Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande break chart record as Rain On Me makes number one
by Jamie TabbererLady Gaga and Ariana Grande have hit the top of the UK singles chart with their duet Rain On Me, and really, were you expecting anything less?
What’s more, the dance floor anthem is is a record-breaker.
With 8.1 million plays in seven days, it marks biggest-ever opening week for streaming numbers by an all-female collaboration in the UK, according to the Official Charts Company.
It’s also, somewhat miraculously, the first single by Gaga to debut in the chart top spot.
Rain On Me reaches the pinnacle after selling an equivilent of 70,000 copies.
The song, taken from Gaga’s newly-released sixth studio album Chromatica, has so far also reached the top 10 in countries such as Italy, Norway and Germany.
Speaking to OfficialCharts.com about the news, Gaga said: ‘If someone told me the day I wrote Rain On Me, a day I was crying water like misery, that this song would someday be number one, I never would have believed them.
‘Thank you for celebrating this song. It’s my gift to you, to celebrate yourself. I hope the whole world is dancing.
‘To all my UK monsters, I love you so much from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for making me number one, and I hope you feel number one every time you listen to this song.’
Indeed we do, even on our 283rd play.
It is the sixth number one single for both Gaga and Grande, who join an elite group of musical icons such as Queen and Britney Spears in reaching this milestone.
The last all-female collab to hit the top spot was in 2014. The song, Bang Bang, featured Ariana alongside Nicki Minaj and Jessie J.
Chromatica is perhaps Gaga’s best release in years, so we’re super glad to see that Rain On Me has been such a success.
