Samsung Announces Galaxy Book S Powered By Intel Lakefield Processor

by

Samsung has officially unveiled a new variant of the Galaxy Book S laptop powered by Intel's Lakefield processor. Apart from using the Intel chip, the 2020 Galaxy Book S packs similar hardware as the original Galaxy Book S. Samsung launched the Snapdragon 8cx powered Galaxy Book S alongside the Galaxy Note 10 series in August 2019.

It will be available in two color options — Earthy Gold and Mercury Gray. The 2020 Galaxy Book S is also the first laptop to use the new Intel Lakefield chip. Using the System on Chip (SoC) design, the Lakefield chip can offer high-performance computing with improved mobility.

2020 Galaxy Book S is the first Intel Lakefield-powered laptop in the world

The laptop runs on Windows 10 Home/Pro and supports Windows Hello sign in with an integrated fingerprint scanner. It sports a large 13.3-inch touchscreen display with Full HD resolution. The display can increase its peak brightness up to 600 nits while in outdoor mode. On top of the display is a 1MP camera for video calling.

Samsung claims the 42Wh battery on this laptop will last for up to 17 hours during video playback on a single charge. Still, this is well short of the 25 hours of battery life of the Snapdragon 8cx-powered Galaxy Book S. The 2020 Galaxy Book S measures 11.8mm in thickness at its thickest point.

Most portable 13.3-inch laptop?

The Intel Core i5-L16G7 chip on the Galaxy Book S comes combined with Intel UHD Graphics and 8GB of LPDDR4x RAM. It is also an incredibly lightweight laptop, weighing in at just 950g. In terms of connectivity, it supports Wi-Fi 6, 4G LTE (Cat 16), and Bluetooth 5.0. However, there is no 5G support on this laptop.

On the audio front, the Galaxy Book S is equipped with quad stereo speakers tuned by AKG and Dolby Atmos support. There are two USB Type-C ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The laptop comes with up to 512GB of eUFS storage and includes a MicroSD card slot for further expanding the storage up to 1TB.

With the Your Phone feature, the Galaxy Book S can now show notifications and messages from a synced Android smartphone. Moreover, it will even support cross-device copy & paste and photo transfer. The laptop also has an ambient light sensor for adjusting the keyboard backlit brightness.

The Samsung Galaxy Book S 2020 is priced from EUR 999 (approx. $1105). It will be available to purchase in the UK starting in June. Samsung is yet to reveal pricing and availability details for other markets.
