49ers DE Ford reportedly has 'extensive' knee surgery

Dee Ford had what he termed “pretty extensive” arthroscopic knee surgery in the offseason, leaving the San Francisco 49ers’ pass rusher as a question mark in his second season with the team.

Ford had 6.5 sacks last season. The former first-round pick missed five games with a hamstring injury while also dealing with tendinitis in his knee.

Ford said Friday he had surgery a few weeks after the 49ers lost in the Super Bowl to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 49ers traded for Ford, who had been given the franchise tag by the Chiefs, prior to last season and signed him to a five-year, $85.5 million contract extension.

Next season, Ford’s base salary jumps to $15.15 million.
