90s celebrity power couples who were serious style goals back in the day
If you grew up in the Nineties, there’s a good chance you spent an evening or two trying to fashion an outfit that vaguely resembled something worn by your favourite celebrity power couple.
Things were seemingly simpler back then, during an era when dungarees, crop tops and platform trainers reigned supreme, before contouring, tiny handbags and skinny jeans became a thing.
And while the 2000s gave us some pretty iconic pairings too – like Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, and Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez – we can’t help but feel a special pang of nostalgia for our favourite Nineties couples…
1. David and Victoria Beckham
As the age-old saying goes, the couple that matches their outfits together, stays together.
Ever the style icons, the Beckhams were big fans of colour coordinating their looks, even before they officially tied the knot.
Here they are in 1998, twinning in black turtleneck sweaters and coats to announce their engagement.
2. Cameron Diaz and Matt Dillon
Diaz and Dillon had already been dating a few years before starring in hit Nineties movie There’s Something About Mary, together.
During the mid-Nineties, the pair were known for their gloriously casual red carpet looks (Dillon was a big fan of ditching the suit in favour of a shirt and T-shirt combo).
Sadly they called it quits in 1998, the same year the film came out.
3. Johnny Depp and Kate Moss
The coolest couple of the Nineties dated for several years, and during their time together produced some seriously key grunge looks we’re still obsessed with now.
From matching leather jackets and Doc Martens, to red carpet gothic glamour, Johnny Depp and Kate Moss were the alternative couple we all wanted to be.
4. Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt
Before she married Chris Martin, Gwyneth Paltrow was briefly engaged to Brad Pitt, who she met on the set of 1995 film Se7en.
Easily one of the best-dressed couples of the Nineties, the pair never failed to look effortlessly chic, thanks to Pitt’s stellar suits and Paltrow’s cool-girl slip dresses and shades.
5. Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise
The epitome of Hollywood glam, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise had Nineties red carpet style down to an art.
Think crushed velvet dresses, embroidered fabrics and choker necklaces for her, and floppy hair and sunglasses for him.
6. Liz Hurley and Hugh Grant
Liz Hurley and Hugh Grant cemented their status when she stepped out wearing a Versace gown held together with safety pins at the premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral.
The pair have plenty more style hits in the archive though – remember Hurley’s amazing bedazzled 1995 Oscars dress?
Sadly they broke up eight years into their romance, and we’ve basically never recovered.
