19-year-old deemed an ‘incredible fit’ for Liverpool, tipped to become a world-class superstar

Liverpool would be a great club for Erling Braut Haaland to join one day, Red Bull Salzburg head coach Jesse Marsch has claimed.

The Reds have twice come up against the Norwegian striker this season, the two teams locking horns in the Champions League group stage, and he scored in Salzburg’s 4-3 defeat at Anfield.

Haaland has since moved to Borussia Dortmund with no let-up in his goalscoring heroics – to date, he has 13 goals and three assists from just 14 games for his new side.

The 19-year-old left Salzburg in January after Dortmund met his 20m Euro (£17.1m) buyout clause, the chapter closing with a tally of 29 goals and seven assists from 27 games.

Marsch, speaking on a special Blood Red podcast, as transcribed by the Liverpool Echo, spoke of how a lot of players who have come through the Salzburg ranks would be a great fit for Liverpool.

Speaking specifically about Haaland, he said: “We are only scratching the surface of the potential for Erling. He will continue to do well at Dortmund and I’m not sure how long he’ll be there before it’s time for him to take the next step, but he has the potential to be one of the best players in the world, no doubt.

“It’s another player that Liverpool would be very lucky to have. It won’t be cheap, but he loves the explosive style of play and being in open spaces, running in behind defences and being aggressive. Just by theory, it fits the way Liverpool plays. He would be an incredible fit.”

Haaland’s goalscoring record is nothing short of frightening, and it’s hard to believe he’s still a teenager – he’s surely the next football superstar in line after Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

He’s extremely unlikely to change clubs any time soon, particularly this summer, given current events, but if both Haaland and Liverpool continue on their current trajectories, there’s no reason why the two can’t link up in the next few years.
