Bomb disposal experts have been called to an Ayrshire town after an object was found in a river.

The item, thought to be a piece of mounted artillery, was found in the River Garnock near Dirrans Terrace in Kilwinning and resulted in a 200m zone of the town being blocked off.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers found an item with an appearance similar to that of a piece of ordnance in the River Garnock near Dirrans Terrace, Kilwinning around 11.20am on Friday, 29 May, 2020.

"A 200m cordon was put in place as a precaution.
