Dongban Mensem: Buhari extends appointment of president of appeal court

- The appointment of Justice Dongban-Mensem has been extended

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the extension of the appointment of Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem as the Acting President of the Court of Appeal (PCA).

The extension takes effect from June 3 for a further period of three months.

The president’s senior special assistant on media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, confirmed this in a statement in Abuja on Friday, May 29.

According to the presidential aide, this is pursuant to Section 238(4) and (5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Dongban-Mensem was first appointed as the Acting President of the court, for an initial period of three months, from March 6.

He took over from Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, who retired from service on March 6.

Recall that Legit.ng had reported that in place of Zainab Bulkachuwa, President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Dongban Mensem as the acting head of the Court of Appeal.

Mensem's appointment, which takes effect from Friday, March 6, will last for a period of three months.

Shehu said that as the next most senior judge of the court, the new appointee will occupy the office until a substantive appointment is effected by the presidency to take over the position of Bulkachuwa.

The presidential media aide said that Mensem's appointment is in line with Section 238(4) & (5) of the 1999 constitution.

Legit.ng had also reported that Bulkachuwa, on Friday, February 7, officially retired from her office and service in that capacity.

Bulkachuwa's retirement ceremony coincided with the commissioning of the reconstructed and furnished official quarters building for judges of the appellate court in Rivers by the state government under Governor Nyesom Wike on Friday.

Speaking on how she would spend her life after retirement, the outgoing judge said that she would apply all that had been learnt through the long years of active service.

Bulkachuwa stated that she would devote her time service humanity both in Nigeria and wherever she finds herself.
