Aitch, a very 2020 British rapper, has admitted he wasn’t aware he’d sampled a Destiny’s Child song on a new track until his mum told him so.

Damn.

But it’s unsurprising, really, since DC’s Bills, Bills, Bills – despite still sounding as fresh as a daisy – is 21 years old.

(That’s older than Aitch himself, who is 20. And much older than Aitch’s song, Triggered, which is brand spanking new.)

Speaking on the The Capital XTRA Breakfast show on Friday, Aitch said: ‘Do you know what, I actually just went to the studio, made the song, I just liked the beat. I didn’t even realise it was a Destiny’s Child song until I got home, showed the song to my mum and my mum said “that’s Destiny’s Child!”

‘So no one actually mentioned it in the studio and then when my mum told me that, it just made it even better.

‘I just thought “yeah, that’s going to attract more of an audience.” Do you get what I mean?

‘But yeah, that’s my sly little favourite.’

We’re glad to hear pop royalty are getting due credit…

Bills, Bills, Bills was the Beyonce-fronted Destiny’s Child’s first number one single in the US, and reached number six in the UK. It was taken from the band’s second, seminal album The Writing’s On the Wall.

At the time, DC was comprised of Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, LeToya Luckett, LaTavia Roberson. Letoya and LaTavia were later replaced by Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin, before Farrah exited the group.

Destiny’s Child’s first single as a trio, Independent Women Part I, then reached the top spot on both sides of the Atlantic.

Triggered is a song on Aitch’s new surprise EP Polaris, which dropped today. Enjoy!
