Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper has been in intensive care fighting Covid-19 for several weeks now.

Devastated Kate has been updating the public on his health but her latest news left colleague Piers Morgan heartbroken.

Piers a longtime friend of Kate and Derek tweeted his response to her emotional statement as she thanked NHS staff during this week's last 'Clapping for carers'.

Kate said her husband is still "fighting" as she thanked the NHS staff who have been looking after Derek,  a former lobbyist and political adviser.

The star's husband was taken to hospital in March. The couple have two children - Darcey, 13 and and 11 year old Billy

On Instagram Kate posted: "Hear this might be the last clap for carers so Billy thought we should get the drums out to go out in style!. Its been such a source of weekly comfort for them and  me and I must admit I felt the tears come tonight to think it’s coming to an end while our fear for Derek goes on.

"But even if we don’t clap next Thursday it won’t diminish my eternal thanks to all in the #nhs. They are keeping Derek alive & everyone of them is fighting as hard as Derek is to give us the chance to be reunited..."

Piers tweeted: "This breaks my heart. Few happier, more positive people than @kategarraway. Or a more loyal, decent friend & colleague.

"So many families like hers going through so much unimaginable anguish in this crisis. Sending all my love to Kate and continuing to root for Derek."

Kate and Derek married in 2005.

Piers joked the blonde presenter could have done much better and revealed he had told Kate just before the nuptials.

He said: "After Kate announced she was marrying Derek Draper, with whom I used to lock horns when he was a Labour spin doctor and I was editor of the Daily Mirror, I emailed her to say: 'If I'd known the bar was that low, I'd have had a crack myself.'"

He also added that Kate found his comment so hilarious  that she put the quote on menu cards when they got married.
