Latest updates on when cinemas will reopen in the UK

Cinemas across Liverpool have been closed since March due to coronavirus, but they could finally be on their way back.

With lockdown restrictions slowly but surely being lifted, businesses across the hospitality industry are eagerly awaiting the day they can reopen.

In June, many sites will be allowed to reopen , including open air markets, car showrooms and non-essential shops.

But places such as bars, restaurants, hair salons and cinemas have still yet to be given the go ahead.

The Government’s 50-page coronavirus exit strategy released two weeks ago gave the possible date of July 4, bringing hope to many business owners.

Cineworld closed their doors across the UK in March, including its sites at New Mersey Shopping Park in Speke , and Chalon Way in St Helens.

This week Cineworld confirmed it hopes to be open from July , if the government lifts restrictions related to cinemas.

If this goes ahead, Cineworld has announced the films it will reopen with, starting with the Christopher Nolan movie Tenet, followed by Disney’s Mulan.

Vue Cinemas, which has a branch in Birkenhead , confirmed this month that it hopes to reopen in mid-July.

In an interview with the BBC, Vue Cinemas’ chief executive Tim Richards said that, if all goes to plan, branches will welcome audiences back for the launch of Tenet, similar to Cineworld.

This month, Showcase Cinemas , which has a venue on the East Lancs Road, issued a statement to say it is working towards reopening on July 4

Mark Barlow, general manager at Showcase Cinemas UK, said: “Since the lockdown started, we have been working on what measures will be implemented when we are allowed to reopen, for the comfort and safety of guests and employees alike.

“We have also been liaising throughout with the UK Cinema Association and the relevant authorities and will continue to do so until such time as we reopen, based on the latest government guidance.

“It is clearly dependent on many factors, but the most recent announcement from the government gave a proposed date of July 4 for leisure destinations that can implement social distancing and other safety measures to reopen, and this is what we are currently working towards.”

Everyman and Odeon cinemas remain closed with no further information available yet.
