Police investigating after Montreal-area synagogue vandalized

B’nai Brith Canada is describing a recent act of vandalism against a Montreal-area synagogue as one of the worst such incidents in Canada in recent years.

The Jewish organization says a congregant who visited the site on Wednesday found sacred Torah scrolls dumped on the floor and other religious items stuffed into toilets.

They say it’s unclear when the acts took place since the building has been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

B’nai Brith says Torah scrolls are extremely sacred, to the point where damaged items are buried in a cemetery to dispose of them.

Montreal police confirm they received a call about a break-and-enter at the site in Cote St-Luc and are investigating the incident.

B’nai Brith Canada says its annual audit shows 2,000 anti-Semitic incidents were reported across Canada last year.
