Peru COVID-19 update: ‘We continue at a very critical moment regarding the disease situation’

On Friday, March 6, 2020, the first case of coronavirus in Peru was confirmed. As of May 28, 2020, 141,779 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed. Lima continues to be the region with the highest number of COVID-19 infected to date with 87,478.
The number of COVID-19 related fatalities has now reached 4099.
To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Government has decreed that the population must maintain home isolation.
“We continue at a very critical moment regarding the disease situation. There are still new positive cases every day and we are seeing an increase in the rate of infections. We are seeing the health system collapse or on the verge of collapse,” Camille Webb, infectious medicine doctor and researcher at the Alexander Von Humboldt Institute of Tropical Medicine at Cayetano Heredia University said.
The Ministry of Health (Minsa) launched the call to hire 2,811 health professionals from various specialties in order to optimize and extend the coverage of hospital care for COVID-19 patients in the Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Lima regions. , Loreto, Ucayali, Ancash, Arequipa, Cusco, as well as in Metropolitan Lima.
Through this call, the Minsa requires hiring professionals in human and general medicine, family doctors, and specialists; obstetrics, nursing and technical nursing and others.
In some good news, 38 children of different ages who tested positive for COVID-19 and had to be hospitalized had already overcome the disease and were discharged from the National Institute of Child Health-Breña of the Ministry of Health (Minsa) .
Dr. Cynthia Huby, hospitalization coordinator for the COVID-19 contingency at Children’s Hospital, said the infants showed great strength and, with the support of the health team, defeated the new coronavirus.
