Subsequent defeats to Queens Park Rangers (2014) and Aston Villa last year have made the sight of Wembley a chilling experience for Rams fans.
Even when they did get promoted it ended in disaster, the Rams recording a horrific 11 points in the Premier League, a tally that hasn't been matched by any team.
West Brom fans were quick to point that out to Derby after they tweeted about Pearson's goal yesterday.
Their comments are in a similar vein to those made by Leeds fans when Derby celebrated the anniversary of last year's historic play-off semi-final win at Elland Road.
"How did the Premier league work out for you lads?" one said.
"And 12 months later how we laughed," said another.
"How did that go for you lads? Decent run in the Premier was it?" asked another.
"Was very sad at the time! Was laughing 12 months later though when they finished on record low points and one victory all season," said a fourth.
"Bless & how did the Prem season pan out for ya?" said another.
"That went well didn't it..." said a sixth fan.
Derby were relegated as early as March 29, the club to suffer the drop before April.
