How Drones Are Helping Police Nab Nairobi Escapees

Police officers are now using drones to enhance the directive of cessation of movement in and out of the Nairobi Metropolitan area.

Lameck Malagia, the officer in charge of the operation at Kilimambogo area in Thika, Kiambu County, stated that the use of unmanned aerial vehicles helped to monitor movement along the busy Thika-Garissa highway.

Speaking to People Daily, the officer said that the drones had high-density cameras, which helped to monitor movement from a distance.

So far, the officer disclosed that individuals who were using vast plantations as alternative routes to evade the roadblock had been nabbed.

"We have caught people driving and riding along the vast plantations near where the roadblock has been mounted," Malagia stated.

The officer urged Kenyans to follow set directives by the government in the fight against coronavirus.

Thika Town MP Patrick Wainaina, who donated food items, masks, sanitizers and refreshments to the officers, promised to support them in operating at the Mary Hill and Del Monte roadblocks.

"This is not the right time to lift the ban. The graph is rising and as a country, we can only be extra cautious," the MP stated.

He lauded the government in it's continued fight against the virus and asked Kenyans to continue protecting themselves against.

On May 16, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta extended the cessation of movement into and out of the Nairobi Metropolitan Area, Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale and Mandera counties until June 6, 2020.

Further, he extended the nationwide 7 pm to 5 am curfew to June 6, 2020.
