Travelers from the permitted countries will be allowed entry to Greece on direct flights to Athens or to the northern city of Thessaloniki.

Passengers arriving will be subject to random coronavirus testing, while other safety measures in place will see capacity limits in hotels and resorts, with each having a dedicated doctor on call.

Although Ireland is not among the countries listed today, this list will reportedly be expanded on July 1 to include other countries, the ministry said.

Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis said on Antenna television today; "Our aim is to be able to welcome every tourist who has overcome their fear and has the ability to travel to our country."

The 29 countries announced today were: Albania, Australia, Austria, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Estonia, Japan, Israel, China, Croatia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lebanon, New Zealand, Lithuania, Malta, Montenegro, Norway, South Korea, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic and Finland.

Mr Theoharis said; "We are opening up, but at the same time we are closely monitoring the situation.

"Strict health protocols will protect both staff and tourists."
