Sony post then remove the news that a “system update” is needed for backwards compatibility on PS5

by

Bit of an odd one here, the official PlayStation 5 website was updated and under the heading “Stunning games” the following text was posted.

Marvel at incredible graphics and experience new PS5™ features. Play a back catalog of supported PS4™ games with system update.

Up until this point Sony had not mentioned anything about system updates to run backwards compatible games, it was assumed this was an out-of-the-box feature. The page was quickly updated and the text has been removed but you can see a cached version of the page here.

However, the wording may be an little obtuse and actually refer to an update to the games themselves rather than the PlayStation 5 firmware.

When Mark Cerny gave a deep dive into technical specs of the PS5, and one of the things spoken about was backwards compatibility. During the talk Mark Cerny spoke about backwards compatibility in the context of the top 100 played games on PS4 and how they had been tested to work on the PS5. While this was interesting news it did sow some confusion regarding whether all PS4 games would be backwards compatible or not. To clear up the confusion Sony has released a new statement that you can read below.

A quick update on backward compatibility – With all of the amazing games in PS4’s catalog, we’ve devoted significant efforts to enable our fans to play their favorites on PS5. We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5.

We’re expecting backward compatible titles will run at a boosted frequency on PS5 so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions. We’re currently evaluating games on a title-by-title basis to spot any issues that need adjustment from the original software developers.

In his presentation, Mark Cerny provided a snapshot into the Top 100 most-played PS4 titles, demonstrating how well our backward compatibility efforts are going. We have already tested hundreds of titles and are preparing to test thousands more as we move toward launch. We will provide updates on backward compatibility, along with much more PS5 news, in the months ahead. Stay tuned!

So, probably nothing to worry about.

Probably.
