Top-flight manager names two players in his team who’d be a great fit for Liverpool
by Giuseppe LabellarteLiverpool have been tipped to make more signings from Red Bull Salzburg in future, the Austrian club’s head coach Jesse Marsch has suggested.
The Reds signed Takumi Minamino from Salzburg at the start of the year after triggering his £7.25million release clause and agreeing the move in December.
Liverpool have a great off-field relationship with Salzburg – indeed, their new £50million training base was inspired by their Champions League group opponents (The Independent).
The Anfield side’s data-leaning approach to making signings is similar to that of Salzburg, and as such, Marsch reckons some more of his players would be a good fit for Jurgen Klopp’s charges.
Marsch, speaking on a special Blood Red podcast, as transcribed by the Liverpool Echo, said: “Jurgen Klopp thinks similarly to [Red Bull’s head of sport and development] Ralf Rangnick and the way we think, so he is always looking here.
“Liverpool have the money where they can get these players and you could extend it to other players like [RB Leipzig’s Dayot] Upamecano, or players we have here like Hwang Hee-chan or Enock Mwepu. There are a lot of players here that would fit the Liverpool system, so it’s smart.”
TBR View:
Both Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig have produced some top players in recent years, Upamecano being linked with plenty of teams and Timo Werner believed to be on Liverpool’s radar – and of course there’s Erling Braut Haaland, who’s proving a revelation at Borussia Dortmund.
Minamino has already made the move to Anfield from Salzburg, while Naby Keita and Sadio Mane also had stints there before eventually joining the Reds, and surely Hwang and Mwepu are next in line for a big move, both players having shown they’re a cut above this season.
Hwang, a 24-year-old centre-forward, has 13 goals and 16 assists from 29 appearances and has a price tag of around £34million (Salzburger Nachrichten), while 22-year-old midfielder Mwepu has two goals and six assists from 27 appearances.
