Starving dogs left on death's door making recovery after being rescued by ISPCA
The dogs were left living in squalor starving and severely dehydrated
by Ailbhe DalyTwo dogs who were left on death’s door are making full recoveries in the care of the ISPCA.
The unfortunate pooches were found at a property in Cork City and were extremely emaciated and living in extreme squalor.
Senior Inspector Lisa O’Donovan immediately seized both dogs, a German Shepherd and an Akita and called a veterinary practice to prepare them for their arrival as they were in need of urgent veterinary attention.
Lisa said: “I was extremely concerned about the welfare of both dogs and in particular the German Shepherd dog, later called Foxy.
“She was in a collapsed state and extremely weak and skeletal.
“She was very subdued and I was really worried that she wasn’t going to make it.
“Carrying Foxy’s frail, limp body to my vehicle is a harrowing memory that will stay with me for a very long time”.
Both dogs were urgently transported and admitted to the veterinary hospital where they were described as dangerously dehydrated.
Foxy was anaemic and her prognosis was not looking good.
She received emergency supportive therapy to rehydrate her and to reverse hypothermia.
The Akita, who was named Kiba, was also in very poor condition and the foul odour coming from both dogs was putrid.
Both animals received the necessary veterinary treatment they desperately required and were transported to an ISPCA animal centre for care and rehabilitation.
Lisa added: “I was relieved that I was able to help Foxy and Kiba and bring them to safety.
“It was really distressing to see the dogs living in such awful conditions and knowing that if Foxy was left there a little longer, she would not have survived”.
