Gary Neville has been discussing what the Premier League's restart plans mean for the Championship.

It was announced last night that 'Project Restart' - the Premier League's return from the coronavirus pandemic - has been given the green light.

The top flight will return from a three-month absence on June 17, with two games in hand - Manchester City vs Arsenal and Aston Villa vs Sheffield United - getting the season back underway.

It is hoped that the campaign will conclude by August 1.

Meanwhile in the Championship, the second tier will likely not be far behind in restarting with Derby County set to get back underway after nearly three months off.

Neville thinks it is important that the Championship does indeed restart so promotion to the Premier League can be ratified.

The future of Leagues One and Two is still up in the air.

"I think the Championship will go ahead," he said on The Football Show on Sky Sports.

"I do think it is sad to be fair that the funding can’t be put into place for League One and Town.

"We are going to see clubs like Stevenage and Tranmere probably lose their spaces in their leagues without even having the opportunity to play for it down to economic reasons because the funding isn’t there to support football at that level.

"But I do think the Championship will play and I do think that will be something that happens pretty quickly after the Premier League.

"We all know how important it is to the likes of Leeds and West Brom, who are at the top of that league. Everything they have invested, not just financially but emotionally to get into the Premier League, how important it is for them as clubs.

"There is a lot to look forward to in terms of football not just at the Premier League level but at the Championship level, and the play-offs likely at League One and Two as well."

Leeds are top of the Championship while West Brom are second.

They are six and seven points clear of the automatic promotion spots respectively.
