Report: Arsenal complete first summer signing

by

Arsenal have reportedly completed their first summer signing in the form of teenage winger George Lewis after Norwegian side Fram Larvik’s sporting director Jostein Jensen told VG that he has agreed a move.

Rwanda-born winger Lewis, 19, was initially linked with the Gunners at the beginning of the month – with the wide man having impressed on a trial at Arsenal, as per Goal. He spent an initial week at Arsenal, before being handed another seven days.

Now, Lewis is set to agree an Arsenal deal. Goal also claimed in the report at the beginning of the month that the winger would join Steve Bould’s Under-23 side – unlike Matteo Guendouzi and Gabriel Martinelli who went straight into the senior side.

Jensen, who is the sporting director of Fram Larvik where Lewis last played, confirmed to Norwegian outlet VG that Lewis had agreed a move to Arsenal and that a deal was complete – despite a lack of confirmation from the Gunners.

“Yes, we can confirm that [Lewis has signed an Arsenal contract]. I have been told that he has signed for Arsenal,” Jensen said. He continued: “We wish George good luck.”

TBR’s view – What chance does Lewis have of a first-team breakthrough?

Under Mikel Arteta, a number of young Arsenal stars have been given a chance. Out wide, Reiss Nelson and Bukayo Saka have impressed as young wingers for the north London club, while Emile Smith-Rowe could return to add another option.

So, Lewis could break into the senior side with Arteta willing to place his faith in young players. But similarly, Lewis will find the players Arteta has given a chance – in Saka, Nelson and others – in front of his path to the first team. A loan is needed.
