hat: Instagram Live studio tour with Gunditjmara and Torres Strait Islander artist Lisa Waup.

Waup's practice involves weaving and printmaking; it celebrates her ancestral connections and often incorporates natural materials.

“I think it is greatly important for artists to be able to share their stories at the moment," says Waup. "The world relies on creatives for entertainment, for company, for comfort – in turn, we are then able to share another way to express and touch people on a different platform.”

Recently, Waup collaborated with Melbourne-based fashion designer Ingrid Verner on her fashion label Verner, to produce two major collections that have been shown internationally.

The Papua New Guinea aesthetic that can be seen in Waup's work is a legacy of her years spent in the country, which is where her husband is from and where their children were born.

Use of feathers in Waup’s practice is highlighted in Cultural nesting, 2013 (part of the National Gallery of Victoria's collection), while a cluster of woven baskets representing bird’s nests featured in the NGV's 2013 exhibition Melbourne Now.

During her Instagram Live studio visit, Waup will talk about the ideas she's exploring as part of the master of art degree she is doing at the Victorian College of the Arts. As well, she will discuss her role at Mornington's indigenous arts centre, Baluk Arts, where, as programs co-ordinator, she has been sending out art materials and creating video tutorials to support artists while exhibitions and programs have been postponed.

Waup will be interviewed by a curator from the NGV during the half-hour event.

When: June 3 at 6pm.
