Emmerdale star fears COVID-19 second wave after clap for carers ends

by

Emmerdale star Charley Webb has shared fears which are no doubt echoed by many in the country during this time as she worries that a second wave of coronavirus may become more likely as people act as though life is ‘back to normal’.

With the easing of lockdown rules and also the Dominic Cummings fiasco, there has been much discussion that the confusion people feel about what they can and can’t do will grow and lead to further flouts of the guidelines.

Last night was the ‘official’ last nationwide clap for carers, which would see communities applaud the NHS and other keyworkers in unison at 8pm.

But Charley, best known for playing soap’s Debbie Dingle, has voiced her concern that ending this tradition may add to the feeling of resumed normality earlier.

She said on Twitter: ‘Why is tonight the last night of clapping? I worry this is an indication that people think we’re back to normal.

‘I understand that things are changing which is great but some of the area where we live is like a holiday town. This is how we will end up with a 2nd wave.Don’t get it! (sic).’

Charley recently admitted that there was no official return date in mind for Emmerdale after she had discussions with bosses.

However she is certainly not ruling out going back down the line.

She said: ‘At home with the kids is where I need to be at the moment. We’re in talks and work has been amazing about giving me the extra time I need. The difference from two to three children feels huge, so I haven’t confirmed when I’m going back yet.

‘Bowie starts school in September, and I want to be around for that. I can’t imagine being back at work at the moment.’

Emmerdale yesterday confirmed they will not come off air as they have returned to filming. However for three weeks they will reduce output to two episodes before then returning to a Monday, Wednesday and Friday pattern.
