As of April 2020, the total number of breeding pigs in the country was at 2.86 million, an increase of more than 100,000 compared to end-2019. The number of breeding pigs was around 4 million between 2015 and 2018 period, according to agricultural ministry’s data.

In 2019, when the African swine fever outbreak happened the number of breeding pigs fell to 2.72 million, affecting severely to pork supply in the domestic market.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc ordered ministries and localities to keep the pork price low. The government recommended price is VND70,000 ($3) per kilogram, which insiders said is almost impossible to achieve due to the shortage of market hogs.
