Former Manchester United boss slams the club’s transfer policy
by Jyotirmoy HalderFormer Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has taken a dig at United’s transfer policies and has sharply criticized the club.
While seeing Manchester United’s legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson walking down the line formed by his players for the last time on 12 May 2013, the fans at the Stretford End would have hardly anticipated the crisis which club the club was about to be embroiled in.
Following the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson from ‘The Theater of Dreams’, Manchester United hired David Moyes as the club’s next boss. However, his stay at the Mancunian club wasn’t as long-lasting as it was initially expected.
A run of terrible results saw the Scot get the sack on April 22, 2014. His departure from the club costed the club in the form of £5 million, an amount the club had to pay in compensation.
On the following month, Louis van Gaal became the person to claim the throne of Manchester United. With a plethora of experience under his belt, the UEFA Champions League-winning manager with Ajax was believed to be the right man for the United job.
However, despite winning the FA Cup for United in 2015-16, Louis Van Gaal got replaced by Jose Mourinho in the summer of 2016.
Speaking on an interview with Voetbal International via Manchester Evening News, United’s former boss Louis van Gaal sharply criticised the club for not letting him his preferred transfer targets and put all the blame on the club’s authorities for his failure at the red side of Manchester, saying:

“Manchester United did not have the qualities to become champions and had an outdated selection with ten players over 30, five over 35.”
“So I told them I was going to rejuvenate and which players should come. I didn’t get one of those.
“Then you end up in a different segment and as a coach you have to push your boundaries. You don’t expect that at the richest club in the world.
“A turnover of £600million and can’t buy the players you need. You should buy number one and not number seven.
“Of course, the selling club also thinks: ‘If you are so rich, you also have to pay the highest amount imaginable for a player’. That was what happened with transfers.
“Then you have to do with the numbers seven or eight on your wish list. For which you actually pay way too much money, on which the coach is judged and convicted.”
During his 2-year-stay at the club, Van Gaal spent over £250million on the likes Angel Di Maria, Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind, Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin, Sergio Romero and Anthony Martial.
While some of the aforementioned names have proved their traits while playing for the Reds and have established themselves as the pivotal members of United’s current squad, others have been shown the exit doors for the betterment of both the parties.
