FG says other diseases are killing Nigerians more than COVID-19

The federal government has disclosed that Nigerians are dying of diseases more than COVID-19.

Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) who chairs the country’s COVID-19 task force at a press briefing of on Thursday, May 28, said other diseases are killing Nigerians because hospitals are refusing to treat patients of those ailments for fear of coronavirus.

He noted that the federal tertiary institutions were mentioned among those rejecting patients for fear of COVID, Daily Trust reports.

Mustapha stated that the federal government was saddened by the situation which it described as unacceptable.

“Truth be told, we’re having more deaths from non-attendance to other diseases than even COVID 19. The reason for the greater emphasis on COVID 19 is because it is a pandemic and if not curtailed has a capacity of wiping out large segments of our population," the SGF said.

Meanwhile, the Ogun state government has lifted the lockdown order pronounced on the state since the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic to combat the spread of the disease.

Nigerian Tribune reports that this was contained in the address of the state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Thursday, May 28, while updating the efforts of his administration in containing the virus.

Legit.ng gathered that the governor noted that the state had been on lockdown for over eight weeks, with the government providing three days of window relaxation in a week.

He, however, said that the state would be on lockdown on Saturday and Sunday only till further notice. The governor noted that members of the public would now go out from Monday to Friday.

In another report, the federal government of Nigeria has disclosed that three out of the numerous claims of COVID-19 local cure have been found promising.

According to the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, the promising cures have been forwarded to relevant authorities for validation.

This was disclosed by chairman of the PTF, Boss Mustapha.

Going further, he disclosed that the validation was made by the Federal Ministry of Health after holding a virtual meeting with Nigerian Researchers and Scientists.
