Lady Gaga’s new album Chromatica: Full track listing and review round up

by

Lady Gaga released her first album since the soundtrack to A Star is Born today, the pop-dance album Chromatica.

Many of her fans are hoping it marks the return of Gaga and her original sound, after releasing a cover album of jazz standards with Tony Bennett and the more reserved 2016 album, Joanne, which some did not take to but others think deserves long-overdue respect.

Metro.co.uk are big fans of the album, giving it 4.5 out of 5 and suggesting one track, Alice, is a ‘career-best’, but what have other critics and fans online had to say about the pop star’s new album so far?

Clash

Giving the album an 8/10, Clash writes that this is Gaga taking us back to her roots.

‘Chromatica is stuffed full of hi-NRG club bangers that truly hark back to Gaga’s imperial period. It exists in world completely immune to recent trends in pop, where Drake and The Weeknd’s introspective, downcast R&B didn’t conquer all and, as a result, it’s like a beacon to a brighter tomorrow.’

AV Club

Giving the album a B grade, the publication calls the album ‘at times frenetic and disjointed.

‘Self-doubt and self-sabotage are recurring themes in the lyrics of Gaga’s sixth studio album, which itself suffers from an identity crisis.’

But the review does call out some positives, saying: ‘Much of the album is electro dance-funk at its finest. The irresistibly catchy “Plastic Doll” and lead single “Stupid Love” fuse the best of Gaga’s past iterations into feel-good disco tracks with just the right amount of pain and weight to them.’

Evening Standard

In their four-star review, they write: ‘Stripped of the pretensions of her third album, Artpop, and the Meat Loaf influences of her second, Born This Way, it’s a non-stop pop rocket into space and a welcome reminder of the unlocked world we once knew.’

Riot Mag

Riot magazine echoes sentiments of classic Gaga returning in their 7/10 review.

‘The record is Back To The Future-meets-Mad Max-meets-Barbarella, creating an interesting dichotomy of sounds that’s both futuristic and retro. Filled with infectious dance tracks, disco and sci-fi elements, brought together against a pumping bassline, Gaga has restored our faith in pop music and has us wishing we could live on the fictional planet of Chromatica.’

Social media

However, some on social media have been quick to dismiss the record as generic or forgettable.

Others were quick to point out that the album falls into ‘grower’ category.
