Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has since apologised for the arrest of the journalist and a CNN crew and is working to get them released as soon as possible

Watch the shocking moment when a CNN journalist and his crew were arrested during a live report about protests in Minneapolis over the death of George Floyd.

Journalist Omar Jimenez was covering the Minneapolis riots live on air, showing a protestor being apprehended by state police when he was circled by a number of officers.

He politely asked state police where they wanted him and his crew to move back to and explained that they were there to report on the protests.

Without any reason given two officers took the reporter away in handcuffs and this action was followed up by arrests of the remaining crew while a news anchor reported what was happening in real-time.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has since apologised for the arrests and is working on getting the CNN team released as soon as possible.

In a statement, CNN said: "A CNN reporter and his production team were arrested this morning in Minneapolis for doing their jobs, despite identifying themselves -- a clear violation of their First Amendment rights.

"The authorities in Minnesota, including the Governor, must release the three CNN employees immediately."

Chaos has erupted in Minneapolis in recent days with riots and protests raging on in protest against the horrific death of George Floyd.

An FBI investigation has since been launched into Floyd's death and the officers responsible have been fired.

Friday's arrests of the CNN crew follow a Minneapolis police station being set alight on Thursday evening, the base of four officers who were fired after Floyd's death in their custody on Monday.
