VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130 — The Chinatown Lions in Vancouver have been vandalized with racist graffiti, again.
Someone spray-painted racist graffiti on the Millennium Gate statues earlier this month.
“We are extremely disheartened to share the news that yet again the Chinatown Lions have been defaced with racist graffiti,” The City of Vancouver says in a tweet Friday.
The city is working with the Chinatown community to identify steps to address this issue, as well as supporting the Vancouver Police Department with its investigation.
Meanwhile, work has begun to remove the graffiti while the city explores ways of coating the lions to prevent similar incidents from happening.
After the first one, the statues were covered in duct tape to hold solvent in place to get rid of the paint.
They were again covered in tape Friday.
Earlier this month, Vancouver police reported a “staggering” increase in the number of hate-related and anti-Asian crimes in the city so far this year.
The City of Vancouver also declared May Asian Heritage Month.
