Report: Jurgen Klopp has told Liverpool board this week that striker is ‘perfect’

The Guardian have claimed that Liverpool remain interested in signing RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner and that Jurgen Klopp has this week told the Reds board that the German would be ‘perfect’ for his side.

Werner, 24, has been in excellent form for Leipzig this season – netting 30 goals in just 39 league and cup appearances under the guidance of the highly-rated manager Julian Nagelsmann. The Germany international has also created 12 goals.

Reports earlier this week suggested Liverpool were not interested in signing Werner anymore, with Leipzig refusing to budge on the striker’s release clause. That release clause stands at £52.7million, and lasts until June 15.

It remains to be seen if Liverpool will activate said clause, or will look to negotiate a fee after that clause ends. But this week, Klopp has seemingly told the Reds board that the striker is ‘perfect’ for his side – which could swing the board into action.

TBR’s view – Do Liverpool play the waiting game?

It is a question over whether the Liverpool board think they can get Werner for a fee that is cheaper than his current release clause and therefore wait until the initial clause ends – or just pay up now.

Given that we are approaching the last fortnight of Werner’s current exit clause, it appears Liverpool are ready to wait – with some reports suggesting that his release clause is much smaller in 2021.

But with Klopp reportedly telling his Liverpool board that Werner is perfect, movements could materialise.
