Coronavirus: Five statistics that show how far Ayrshire has come in fight against COVID-19

Lockdown measures have been eased - but has much changed in Ayrshire?

by

Lockdown measures have been eased today for people across Scotland.

That's only been possible due to the reduction in confirmed coronavirus cases and hospital paitents.

In Ayrshire, it shows that the region is making good progress.

But where's the proof? What are the key numbers behind the pandemic in Ayrshire?

Here, we've broken down some of the numbers.

Coronavirus cases in Ayrshire

Cases are still increasing across Ayrshire but the amount of cases being confirmed has been reduced dramatically.

We're a few days away from the end of May but this month has seen Ayrshire record less than half the number of COVID-19 we did in April.

April saw 585 confirmed cases reported, while May has seen 273 cases recorded.

Hospital numbers plummet

There has been a huge shift in the number of hospital patients with coronavirus too since the Scottish Government started releasing the information on April 8.

The amount of patients with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 was at its highest on April 20 when 129 people were in hospital.

At the moment, hospital numbers are at the lowest they've ever been (16) - An 88 per cent reduction since the peak.

Intensive care drop

The highest number of Ayrshire ICU patients was recorded on April 8 (16) and generally has continued to decrease since.

Since May 15 Ayrshire ICU numbers have been listed as 'five or less' - a mechanism put in place to protect the identity of patients.

It's also important to point out that the five or less status also includes zero.

Deaths across region

The number of people dying with coronavirus hasn't risen in Ayrshire for five weeks.

Ayrshire's deadliest week - between April 12 and April 19 - recorded 53 deaths - that number hasn't been greater since.

The past two weeks - May 10 to May 17 and May 17 to May 24 - reported increases of 21 deaths.

NHS staff testing

NHS Ayrshire & Arran staff make up just under a third of positive COVID-19 cases (31 per cent) in the region.

Health chiefs put this down to have proactive policy means they have tested a higher proportion of staff, their household contacts or family members.

But like the confirmed cases falling, positive cases among NHS Ayrshire & Arran staff is also decreasing.

The past two weeks has seen nine of the key workers diagnosed - compared with 69 between April 12 and April 19.
