Better Call Saul’s Kim Wexler Is Better Than Walter White

by

Kim Wexler and Walter Whiter from the universe of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are two of the most intriguing characters in television history. But one proves smarter and better than the other. Here’s how.

Apologies are in order. Better Call Saul the spin-off series of the hit show Breaking-Bad is underway with five very successful seasons. And no one had predicted what has transpired. Better Call Saul is maybe on the way to become a bigger and more successful show than Breaking Bad. And not even the co-creators of both the shows Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould had ever predicted this reality.

But in the end, it is always the audience that calls the shots. And this time the audience has spoken. Kim Wexler, Saul’s wife has been awarded with the most devoted fans in the fandom of the Breaking Bad saga.

Kim Wexler: The Bad Ass

Smart, cunning, borderline evil to protect those they love- fits right into the description of a certain character by the name of Walter White from Breaking Bad. But the smarter, more cunning and evil version of Walter White has emerged from its spin-off series Better Call Saul. Kim Wexler from the first time we meet her to who we know in the fifth season has set a predicament for her audience. Do we really like her more than we like Walter?

It seems like the answer is yes. Kim is the epitome of coolness and smartness unlike the other female characters of the series (here’s looking at you Skylar and Marie) in short, she is someone even Walter would think twice before crossing. Kim Wexler has only one weakness: Being in love with her criminal love interest Jimmy McGill for who she would go to the ends of the earth for. Even if the end of the world is prison. And fans rather than hating her for it, love the dedication she has for Jimmy.

Why Kim Is Better Than Walter

Inherently, despite everything that goes down in the Better Call Saul universe, Kim is a good person. She focuses on pro-bono cases as opposed to the money-makers and stands her ground in a world ruled by more evil than good.

And although Walter might have started as a decent human being by the end of Breaking Bad was on the darker side of grey than his character had ever been. Kim on the other hand is not afraid to stand up, knows exactly when to put a stop, and is to her audience’s delight very unpredictable. In the fifth season, after being completely screwed over by Jimmy during the negotiations over Everett Acker’s property, she goes from almost breaking up with Jimmy to the decision that they should get married.

The way that Vince Gilligan, Peter Gould, and Rhea Seehorn who plays Kim herself has developed this character has given Better Call Saul a new breath of life and taken the audience off-guard time after time like Walter never could. And despite of the resemblance she holds with a grey character like Walter, she is nothing like him. Kim is better.

Better Call Saul Kim Wexler Is Smarter-Wiser Than Walter White

There is of course the occasional route of bad that Kim finds herself tangled in and never not by her own choice. Despite that, Kim is the character that will never break bad.

The greatest mystery Kim holds is herself. The audience eagerly await her unpredictable end in Better Call Saul and it might be one of the greatest suspense in Television history yet. Be that as it may be, the audience are convinced of one thing: Kim is smarter than Walter and she has proved it. She is smart, put together, walks a straight line and even though she might sometimes slip, Kim will always emerge as not the bad guy but the hero with flaws.

So a rebel, smart, manipulative, cunning, evil personality like her could easily out-play and if not out-play then give Walter a run for his money. Walter might be the evil-manipulative genius that he is but the audience is certain- If Walter and Kim ever come face to face, Walter might just stand there watching as Kim Wexler outsmarts him before he realises he’s been screwed over.

Kudos to the writing team of Better Call Saul to come up with a strong female character like Kim and our only wish is to have Kim and Walter face each other. Maybe Better Call Season 6 will make our dreams come true? Do you think that will happen? Let us know in the comments below!
