WhatsApp has more than 2 billion users. WhatsApp is not only popular among friends, family and customers but also hackers. In the latest scam, hackers are using the application to gain access to users' WhatsApp accounts.
As per a report by WABetaInfo, hackers are reaching out to WhatsApp users pretending as WhatsApp's technical team guys. They are making the users giving up control of their accounts by asking for the six-digit verification codes.
Tweep Dario Navarro highlighted the scam first, who wrote to the website to ask if the message was legit. As it turns out, it wasn't!
WhatsApp makes all its announcements through its blog and its official social media handles. It never asks users for their verification codes. "You should never share your WhatsApp verification code with others," WhatsApp says.
One way to avoid giving up the control of the WhatsApp account is, by never sharing the verification code.
The other way is by using two-step verification. In case you are not aware, WhatsApp, similar to Facebook, Instagram, Gmail and many other online services, as an added security measure offers a two-step verification process for users' accounts.
Learn to set two-step verification in WhatsApp accounts:
Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your mobile.
Step 2: Click on the Settings.
Step 3: Click on Account and the Two-Step Verification.
Step 4: Click on the Enable button.
Step 5: Enter the six-digit PIN that you'll be asked when you register your phone number with WhatsApp.
Step 6: Confirm the PIN.
Step 7: Enter your email address and click on Next.
Step 8: Once you confirm your email address click on Done.
