A 38-year-old Langford man is facing numerous charges after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop and getting involved in a two-vehicle collision nearby.

The driver of the second vehicle suffered serious injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

The incident began about 4:40 p.m. Thursday when the Integrated Road Safety Unit was conducting enforcement on foot at McKenzie Avenue and Borden Street. As the driver of a black Mercedes SUV was being directed into a parking lot, he suddenly accelerated and headed along McKenzie toward Quadra Street.

Moments later, a Saanich police officer came across a collision at McKenzie and Rainbow Street involving what turned out to be the same SUV. Witnesses said the driver had fled into Rainbow Park.

A man was arrested and is facing four criminal charges and four Motor Vehicle Act charges. The charges include refusing to supply a breath sample, dangerous driving, flight from police and driving while prohibited.

Eastbound traffic on McKenzie was shut down for more than four hours while police conducted their investigation.

Police are asking to hear from any witnesses, or anyone with dashcam footage in the area from 4:35 to 4:45 p.m. Call 250-475-4321 and refer to file 20-11586.
