Peter Crouch opens up on how Roy Keane meeting left him £25k out of pocket
by Ned KeatingPeter Crouch has admitted he felt he had 'arrived' when he joined Liverpool from Southampton in 2005, but also revealed the move eventually led to an awkward encounter with notorious hardman Roy Keane.
The former England international joined the Reds for £7m 15 years ago after impressing for the Saints despite them eventually being relegated from the Premier League as he netted 16 goals in all competitions.
Having made his international debut earlier that summer, the now 39-year-old admits the switch to Anfield added to a sense that he had finally made it as a footballer after years of trying.
The striker also felt it was high time to treat himself having joined a big club and splashed out on an Aston Martin, but has now revealed that it led to a meeting with Keane that ultimately led to Crouch losing out on £25k.
"It wasn't me, but I'd spent a lot of money on that car and I needed to drive it. I've got my arm out the window, got the sunglasses on and got music on," the former Liverpool star Redknapp’s Home Fixture on Sky.
"I thought 'I've really arrived now, I'm a Premier League footballer and England international'.
"I've pulled up next to Roy Keane and remember looking at Roy thinking we were the same being at big clubs, we're both the men, but the way he looked at me...I've never felt smaller in all my life.
"He didn't even give me a wave or a nod of appreciation or anything, he just drove off.
"I looked at myself in the mirror and thought 'no, you've lost the plot here'. I sold the car that week and must have taken a £25k hit on it."
It seems Crouch may have been a bit premature in buying the Aston Martin after he had wait 19 matches before truly arriving as a Liverpool player and netting his first goal for the club.
