Rangers news: Uefa ‘plan to complete Europa League from quarter finals onwards at ONE city’

by

UEFA plan to play every Europa League round from the quarter finals onwards in ONE host city, according to Getafe president Angel Torres.

Rangers were halfway through a last 16 tie against Bayer Leverkusen when matches were halted due to coronavirus, leaving the European governing body a predicament when it comes to completing both of this season's continental club competitions.

While no firm decision has yet been made on what happens next - Uefa have talked about completing those tournaments in what they call 'a festival of football'.

And now Getafe supremo Torres has given further clues about the plans which could be rubber stamped at an Executive Committee meeting on June 17.

As Covid-19 struck early in Spain and Italy, the Spanish outfit have yet to get their last 16 tie with Inter Milan underway.

He said: "UEFA's idea is to play the Champions League and Europa League, starting from the quarter-finals, across one match in one venue although nothing has been confirmed yet.

"They will come to a decision on June 17 (when the executive committee meets)."

With these matches loosely scheduled for August, Rangers could face a closed doors match in Leverkusen with a chance to play the final rounds in a series of one-off games at one venue if they get through.

The Polish city of Gdansk could come into the equation for this knockout tournament, as it was where the Europa League final was originally scheduled to take place.

Champions League sides could be asked to travel to Turkey, as the continental showpiece was set for Istanbul.

Uefa are keeping their cards close to their chest for now, saying only: "A working group has been set up with the participation of representatives from the leagues and clubs to examine calendar solutions and format options that would allow for the completion of the current season.

"A variety of options are being looked at and no decisions have been made at this stage."

In addition to Getafe and Inter Milan, the Spanish-Italian last 16 clash between Roma and Seville has yet to get under way.
