NASCAR at Charlotte results, highlights from Chase Elliott's win at the Alsco Uniforms 500

by

"I know what you’re thinking, Jeff,"Mike Joy said toJeff Gordonon the FS1broadcast with three laps to go Thursday in the Alsco Uniforms 500. "I don't want to jinx anything either."

Joy didn't have to explain what he meant. NASCAR fans knew exactly what he was talking about. Chase Elliott was leading the race by more thantwo seconds, just as he did the Coca-Cola 600on Sunday nighton the same racetrack at Charlotte Motor Speedway. On Sunday, a late caution took away the victory that Elliott had appeared to have all but locked up.

This time, though, nothing would stop Elliott as he secured his first Cup Series victory of the season.

"We've had some tough losses, but that dealon Sunday night was a heartbreaker," Elliott said in the postrace interview on FS1.

Two races ago, Elliott was inadvertently spun out by Kyle Busch when he was in second place with eight laps to go at Darlington. He got redemptionThursday night, but it wasn't without stress in the last few laps.

"I was just waiting for the caution to come out, to be honest with you," Elliott said in the interview."I thought either the caution was going to come out, I was going to break something or I was gonna crash. Just after the last couple weeks, surely I wasn't going to get a green to the end, so I'm just glad I did."

Denny Hamlin came in second, followed by Ryan Blaney, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Kurt Busch.

Before the race, the biggest obstacle for Thursday night's Alsco Uniforms 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway might have beenthe weather.

After a 68-minute delay Sunday night, the Alsco 500 was postponed from Wednesday nightto Thursday night. It only took 30 laps for Thursday's race to be delayed over an hour when lightning was spotted in the area. After the race resumed, Joey Logano took Stage 1 and Alex Bowman won Stage 2.
