FG gives update on programme to employ 774,000 Nigerians

The federal government has given an update about its plan to employ at 1,000 persons from each of the 774 local government areas in the country.

The minister of state for labour and employment, Festus Keyamo, announced on Thursday, May 28, at a press conference that the employment initiative will start by October 1, Premium Times reports.

He said the beneficiaries of the projects will be selected by special committees constituted in each state of the federation.

According to Keyamo, the special committees would be tasked with recommending the names of the beneficiaries from each of the local government areas in the states to the ministry of labour.

The minister disclosed that a website would be developed where the list of the selected beneficiaries and chosen projects would be displayed for the public.

Keyamo said beneficiaries will be paid N20,000 monthly to carry out public works.

In another news, President Muhammadu Buhari has solicited for the approval of $5.5 billion loans to finance the revised 2020 appropriation bill in a way that will enable the accommodation of some priority projects.

The information of the loan was contained in a letter directed to the House of Representatives by the president on Thursday, May 28.

According to the president, the funds will be used for the federal government’s priority projects and will also be channelled toward the fight against Covid-19 pandemic.

The president also said the funds will be used to assist the states in a concentrated effort against the scourge and help reposition some of the important sectors of the economy.

Buhari said the loan will be used to strengthen the healthcare system, finance smallholder farmers, and provide critical medical supplies to combat Covid-19.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian National Assembly, is once again, saddled with the responsibility of coming up with a legislative initiative that would help rejuvenate the nation's economy and help Nigerians overcome the economic downturn that would likely occur after the COVID-19 pandemic.

One swift step that must be taken by the National Assembly, is to give serious attention to, and speedily pass the local content enforcement bill.

The bill which is known as, the Nigerian Local Content Development and Enforcement Bill 2020, passed second reading on the floor of the House of Representatives, on Tuesday, May 19.
