Alleged exams malpractices: Court discharges Senator Adeleke

Senator Ademola Adeleke, a former PDP governorship candidate in Osun state, has been freed from the alleged examination malpractices trial involving him and four other persons.

Adeleke was discharged by the Federal High Court in Abuja in a ruling by Justice Inyang Ekwo on Friday, May 29.

The Nation reports that the judge said he discharged Adeleke since the prosecution had decided to withdraw the charges preferred against him.

The judge, however, continued with the trial of the other four co-defendants in the case who were re-arraigned on Thursday, May 28.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the federal government temporarily withdrew charges of examination malpractice levelled against the Senator Adeleke.

Adeleke and four others were arraigned by the federal government in October 2018 for allegedly carrying out malpractice at the Community Grammar School, Ojo-Aro, Osun state in the National Examinations Council (NECO examination of June/July 2017.

The counsel to the federal government, Simon Lough, on Thursday, May 28, said the state has amended the charge to exclude Adeleke due to his continued absence in court.

The prosecution pointed out that Adeleke has not attended the trial since 2019 when he was granted permission by the trial judge to travel to the United States on medical grounds.

Lawyers to the defendants, led by Alex Izinyon (SAN) did not object to the prosecution’s decision to amend its charge.

In another report, Senator Adeleke who happens to be an uncle to Nigerian music star, Davido, clocked a year older on May 13, 2020, and the music star made sure to tell the world about it on his social media pages.

The Risky crooner shared a photo of himself chilling with his politician uncle as he recounted how they worked together during the Osun state governorship election.

Senator Adeleke did not win the election but there was no doubt in the minds of people that Davido tried his best to rally for support on social media.

Davido wrote: “We thank God for the privilege of working with you on this mission to turn around the fortunes of the good people of Osun.

"Despite the numerous challenges, you kept us focused & undeterred with your courage. Together we shall succeed.. HAPPY BIRTHDAY UNCLE! Red heart U”.

Davido has also reacted to the discharge of his uncle from the examination malpractice trial. He posted on its official Twitter handle on Friday: "To God be the glory."

Meanwhile, in another report, the Osun state government has disclosed that a man who sneaked into the state from Kano has tested positive for COVID-19.

The state commissioner for health, Rafiu Isamotu, in a statement on Saturday, May 9, stated that the man was isolated after sneaking into the state through Iwo.

Isamotu said the state COVID-19 taskforce was alerted by the patient’s neighbours on his arrival.

The Osun state government also made clarifications on the new returnees from Ivory Coast into the state, saying that official reports showed that they have all tested negative for coronavirus pandemic.
