The Witcher Series Tops 50 Million Sales

by

In just 13 years, CD Projekt Red has developed a series that, in terms of pure sales, is now up there with some of the biggest names in videogaming. According to the developer's latest financial report, more than 50 million Witcher games have been sold.

Back in 2017, the series had managed a total of 33 million sales, suggesting that there's been significant growth since then despite the lack of a main series release (if you exclude The Witcher 3's Switch launch). Standalone card game Gwent and narrative-driven spin-off Thronebreaker may have contributed in some way, but certainly aren't likely to have been as lucrative as The Witcher 3.

Last year's Netflix series, which saw player counts spike on Steam, is likely to have been a major driver of many of those new sales, but it's interesting to see the lofty heights that the Polish developer is now joining. 50 million sales is not to be sniffed at, and puts Geralt and co on a similar level to franchises like Metal Gear, Mortal Kombat, and Far Cry, many of which have been around significantly longer than CDPR's flaagship.
