GTA IV Music Update Corrupts Save Files

by

Two years ago Rockstar was forced to cut music from Grand Theft Auto IV after the relevant licenses expired. Now, some of the songs affected appear to have been restored - but at the expense of some players' save files.

Last night's 400mb update restored a number of songs and relevant radio stations to the game. In threads on both the game's Steam forums and subreddit, however, several players have stated that they also seemed to lose access to their save files, with error messages stating that games "cannot be loaded."

It's an unfortunate slip-up from Rockstar, which has had its fair share of issues with GTA4 over the past few years. As well as the expired licenses, earlier this year it was forced to temporarily remove the game from Steam over issues concerning the now-defunct Games for Windows Live. Now, hours of gameplay may have been lost, although some users have suggested that a subsequent update has resolved the issue. I've reached out to Rockstar for clarification on these player reports, but received no response prior to publication: we'll update if one comes through.
