A former coal miner died at Burton hospital from "Covid-19 pneumonia", an inquest has heard.

Stanley Bishop, from Moira Road, in Woodville, died on Wednesday, April 15, at Queen's Hospital, in Belvedere Road.

The circumstances surrounding the death of the London-born 89-year-old were investigated at an inquest held on Wednesday, May 27.

Here, South Staffordshire senior coroner Andrew Haigh found a medical cause of death of "Covid-19 pneumonia", which was contributed to by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, dementia and pulmonary embolism.

The coroner said Mr Bishop's occupational history of working as a coal miner for around 40 years would have made a " significant contribution " to his death.

Mr Haigh wrote: "He had worked as a coal miner for about 40 years and it is likely that occupational dust exposure has made a significant contribution to the cause of death."

A formal conclusion was recorded by Mr Haigh as "industrial disease".
