Ex-Kasarani MP John Chege Fined Ksh1.3 M for Receiving 100,000 Bribe [VIDEO]

Former Kasarani Member of Parliament John Njoroge Chege was on Friday, May 29 of found guilty of receiving a Ksh.100,000 bribe from a contractor 7 years ago.

Chief Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi noted that Ex-MP on July 13, 2013, received the bribe from Mr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi as an inducement to facilitate payment of Ksh.3.3 million for a completed tuition block at Baba Dogo Secondary School.

When ruling on the case, Mugambi slapped Mr. Njoroge with a Kshs.1.3 million fine or risk one-year jail term.

In mitigation, Mr. Chege told the court he is remorseful and pleaded for the matter to be considered sympathetically saying he has suffered greatly.

Chege was first arraigned in 2013 before the Anti-Corruption Court in Milimani while still in office, becoming the first lawmaker in the 11th Parliament to be charged over corruption allegations.

The ex-MP allegedly solicited the bribe on three separate occasions.

While giving his testimony in court, Abdullahi stated that he reported the matter to EACC where he was given treated money of Ksh 100,000 and a tape recorder. He then, together with the EACC officials, recorded the transaction between him and the former MP.

Chege through his lawyer expressed his remorse for his action adding that he was a family man with three children in school.

“The accused is a politician by choice who is involved in politics for the last 30 years and served as a deputy mayor of this city, he has contributed to the affairs of the city,” his lawyer told the court.
