Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa said the teenager (named withheld), took the keys to his father’s Landcruiser without permission.

Mr Edmore Moyoweshumba was absent  from home when his son hatched the plan to take his car.

In Zimbabwe, the minimum age for a driver is 16 years.

The car is said to have stopped after the engine cut off and the 13 year old teenager allegedly instructed his friends to push the vehicle.

An devasted Mrs Muposhi said it was sad to lose her first born son in such a manner.

Mrs Muposhi revealed that the teenager was in the habit of driving around his father’s cars in Chipinge, even though he was underage and didn’t have a license.

She said they had been trying to stop her now deceased son, Moses, from hitching a ride with the underage boy, but it fell on deaf ears because they were close.

She revealed that the Moyoweshumba family is meeting all the funeral costs, but her son’s death has left a deep void in her heart which will be difficult to fill.

Mr Moyoweshumba was not available for comment as the person who answered his phone, said he was busy arranging Moses’ funeral.

Inspector Kakohwa said the teenager has since been released into the custody of his parents because according to the The Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23, Section 7 (a) and (b)
