Parts of Namadgi reopen for weekend

Sections of the Namadgi National Park will be reopened for the first time since the devastating January fires, just in time for the long weekend.

Continuing recovery from the fires and easing of COVID-19 restrictions will allow Mount Franklin Road, Bendora and Coree regions to reopen from Saturday, May 30.

Minister for the Environment and Heritage Mick Gentleman said Bendora Arboretum, Bendora Picnic area, Mt Franklin Chalet and Bulls Head picnic area would open for the first time since the Orroral Valley bushfire, which burnt 80 per cent of Namadgi.

"Thanks to the hard work and efforts of the bushfire recovery team during the closures, damaged infrastructure has been repaired and the Mt Franklin Road, Bendora and Coree regions are now safe for the community to return to," Mr Gentleman said in a statement.

Mr Gentleman said the rest of Namadgi National Park and the visitors' centre remained closed as work continued on fixing roads, signage, walking tracks and trails. He reminded visitors not stray into closed areas of the park or face fines.

Social distancing was still expected of visitors.
