Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition release date set for August

by

Square Enix have revealed the new release date Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition. The game will now be coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, iOS and Android on 27th August.

The long-awaited remaster of the GameCube exclusive, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition revives the cult classic for modern platforms. An action RPG spin-off from the main Final Fantasy series, it spawned a string of sequels on Nintendo’s DS handheld and the Wii.

The original has been fully overhauled with new character voice overs, new items, more dungeons and bosses, and online multiplayer with full cross-play across all platforms. There’s also a new Mimic feature which lets you take on the form of characters you meet on your journey. This relies on collecting stamps and visiting Moogle Houses or completing difficult dungeons to snag special appearance altering crystals.

One of the key elements of the original was that, while it could obviously be played solo, it also featured an exceedingly niche multiplayer component. This required all players to use a Game Boy Advance connected via link cable to the system, making local co-op a very expensive endeavour. This then gave each player the ability to access shops in towns and manage battle functions and menus on their own private screen.

Innovative, but utterly impractical, Square Enix are using more modern methods to implement co-op into the game. It’s fully online and you don’t need any cables… but you will still all need your own system to play on. That makes the mobile versions a bit of a blessing, through their ubiquity.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition was originally announced back in 2018, planned for a 2019 release, however Square announced an initial delay to January 2020, before then pushing it back further to summer 2020. With the company confident enough to pin a more precise release date on the game’s release, it looks like the team are heading into the final stretch of its revamp.
